An excellent quality Dutch burr walnut 8-day longcaseclock, known as "Amsterdams staand horloge",
signed Jan Breukelaar, Amsteldam, date and day apertures,
seconds dial, moonphase in the arch, striking on 2 bells
("Dutch striking"), alarm, burr walnut veneered oak case,
255 cm high + 27 cm for gilded brass figures and support,
in total 282 cm, ca. 1760.
Jan Breukelaar, a well-known Amsterdam clockmaker, was baptised in Amsterdam in 1738 and died in 1797. His father and brothers
worked as shipbuilders in Amsterdam (Kattenburg). Consequently his first workshop was at the Grote Kattenburgerstraat, later at the Oudezijds Achterburgwal. The family came from the east of Holland (Achterhoek) in the 17th century. Jan was married to Hendrikje Vos and had 14 children, many of them died in childhood.
Two of his sons, Jan and Nicolaas, became clockmakers.
