A large lantern clock by Richard Ames London

An interesting, third period lantern clock signed „Richard Ames neare St Andrews Church in Holburne fecit“. The massive movement now being reconverted to balance wheel escapement in the correct manner, has hour striking on the large bell and quarter strike on 4 smaller bells. This clock was always fitted with a minute hand, as were all large London quarter-chiming lantern clocks of this period. Overall height 19“ ( 48,5 cm), the pillared movement’s top and bottom plates being 7“ ( 18 cm) square. Circa 1670.

Richard Ames, born in 1634, died in 1682. Apprenticed to Peter Closon between 1648/1649 and 1655 („The Early Clockmakers of Great Britain“ – Brian Loomes) Also see „English Lantern Clocks“ George White,  pages 176 and 177.
