8-Day striking and musical clock by W. & J. Evill Bath

The 8-day movement with original verge escapement, well engraved back plate, strikes the hours on a single bell, also on demand, plays not only 2 tunes by choice, but also chimes the quarter hours and repeats on demand. The musical train comprises 8 bells and 8 hammers. The gilt brass dial has a matted centre within a silvered chapter ring incorporating a silvered plate below the XII reading W. & J. Evill Bath, date from the centre, blued steel hands, a silvered ring in the arch for tune selection reading “Minuet” and “Jigg”. The oak case veneered with Cuba-mahogany, decorated with gilt brass mounts. Height without the top finial 55 cm, date around 1770.

William & John Evill, clockmakers at Bath, dissolved their partnership in 1776. William continues and becomes associated to James Evill, which partnership dissolves in 1790, after which James continues (Baillie).
